Lalo Schifrin – Intersection: Jazz Meet The Symphony #5 $15.18 Personnel includes: Lalo Schifrin, Christian McBride, Jeff Hamilton, David Hamiltion, David Sanchez, James Morrison."Scheherazade Fantasy" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement.Personnel: Lalo Schifrin (piano); Olivier Peters (tenor saxophone); James Morrison (trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone); Frank Chastenier (piano); Jeff Hamilton (drums).Audio Mixer: Wolfgang Hirschmann.Liner Note Author: Richard Palmer.Recording information: Klaus-Von-Bismarck-Saal, WDR Cologne, Germany (11/24/2000/11/25/2000).Photographer: Ines Kaiser.Unknown Contributor Role: Christian Cluxen.Arranger: Lalo Schifrin. The fifth in the series by the legendary pianist (who played with Dizzy Gillespie, has done film scores, and also is accomplished in the classical field) breaks new ground by adding a full jazz band to the WDR Rundfunkorchester of Cologne; only Duke Ellington and Woody Herman attempted such an amalgam before. The orchestra blends well here with the rhythm section built on Christian McBride, Jeff Hamilton, and Schifrin himself; other featured performers are saxophonist David Sanchez and trumpeter James Morrison. Schifrin wrote the ambitious opening title track, which features Sanchez`s honking tenor weaving in and out of a percussion weave of drums and strings; the middle of the piece features a conversation between drums and bass, then a wafting sax echoed by wild and swirling orchestral swells. The orchestra is used almost as a single instrument. Morrison`s trumpet and flugelhorn are the focus of "Scheherazade Fantasy," which begins ominous and moody before evolving into a swinging big band-flavored number. Schifrin chooses an interesting array of material, from Coltrane`s plaintive "Naima" to Horace Silver`s whimsical "Tokyo Blues," which musically conveys the chaotic nature of city traffic. Another unique inclusion is Alex North`s "Spartacus," which is given a lyrical reading by Sanchez without too much cacophony. An original approach to jazz by numerous masters. ~ Jonathan Widran Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Where Heaven and Earth Meet (Hardcover) $75 One of the most extraordinary spaces on earth, Jerusalem`s Esplanade has been regarded as sacred for about three millennia. For Judaism, it is the holiest space, where the Solomonic and Herodian Temples once stood and where, in the messianic age, the Temple is to be rebuilt at God`s behest. For Christendom, it is the site of the Herodian Temple, which Jesus repeatedly visited, foretelling its destruction and announcing the advent of a new, spiritual worship of God. For Islam, it is the holy space to which the Prophet Muhammad traveled on his mystical Night-Journey and Ascension, and which holds the Dome of the Rock and the Aqsa Mosque.Where Heaven and Earth Meet is an unprecedented endeavor. For the first time, an Israeli, a Palestinian, and a Dominican institute of higher learning, all located in Jerusalem, have jointly sponsored a volume dealing with Jerusalem`s sacred Esplanade–not only with its monuments, but also with the conflicting emotions they have aroused over the ages and with the passions they ignite today. The book contains eleven articles written by leading experts on the various periods, which add up to an authoritative, up-to-date account of the site`s history; as well as five thematic essays, ranging from the site considered as a work of art to its roles in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim thought; a photographic dossier; and three personal views by the presidents of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Al-Quds University, as well as by Carlo Maria Cardinal Martini. |
